Two Sanctioned Tankers Catch Fire in Black Sea After Suspected Mine Strikes

What Happened?

Two oil tankers — Kairos and Virat — flagged as part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” and under international sanctions, caught fire in the Black Sea near Turkey’s coast after what authorities suspect were external impacts.

The Kairos exploded and caught fire about 28 nautical miles off Turkey’s Kocaeli province while sailing empty toward Russia’s port of Novorossiysk. All 25 crew members were safely evacuated.

Why It Matters?

These vessels belong to what’s known as the “shadow fleet” — a network of tankers that attempt to bypass sanctions on Russian oil exports. The strikes demonstrate the risks and vulnerabilities of such sanction-circumventing logistics.

The attacks mark a shift from strikes on refineries and infrastructure to targeting transport at sea. This could dramatically increase risks for international shipping, insurance costs, and maritime safety in the Black Sea region.
