Tanker Crew Rescues Solo Rower Hit By Rogue Waves 1,100 Miles Offshore

What Happened?

The crew of the Liberian-flagged tanker Horten rescued Belgian solo rower Benoit Bourguet, 47, in the mid-Atlantic Ocean after his small rowing boat capsized in heavy seas.

Bourguet was competing in the World’s Toughest Row, a solo 3,000-mile rowing race from the Canary Islands to Antigua, when two rogue waves in 13–15-foot seas overturned his vessel, City of Liverpool.

Why It Matters?

Being 1,100 miles from land puts this incident deep into open ocean territory, far beyond typical search-and-rescue helicopter or aircraft reach. Successful rescues rely on global cooperation and commercial vessel participation.

The AMVER network — a voluntary ship-reporting system — is designed to connect vessels in distress with nearby ships, significantly improving response time and survival odds in remote waters.
