Photos: U.S. Navy’s Next Supercarrier Completes First Sea Trials, Clearing Major Ford-Class Hurdle
What Happened?
The future USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), the second Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, has successfully completed its first sea trial — known as builder’s trials — off the coast of Virginia.
Departure from Newport News Shipbuilding on January 28, 2026 began the week-long trial at sea, during which key systems including propulsion, navigation and ship operations were evaluated.
Why It Matters?
System Validation: This is the first time Kennedy’s major components and systems were tested underway, helping to identify any issues before formal delivery to the U.S. Navy.
Crew and Builder Coordination: Sailors from the ship’s pre-commissioning unit worked alongside shipbuilders and Navy personnel, reflecting intense collaboration needed to prepare the carrier for fleet service.
