Philippines Ferry Disaster Claims 29 Lives as Entire Fleet Grounded

What Happened?

A roll-on/roll-off passenger ferry, MV Trisha Kerstin 3, capsized and sank in the southern Philippines on January 26, 2026, killing at least 29 people and leaving others missing after hundreds were thrown into the sea in the early hours of the morning.

Survivors reported that strong waves flooded the ferry’s lower deck, where vehicles were lashed down. As waves battered the hull and lashings snapped, the load shifted and the vessel listed sharply to starboard and capsized before sinking in deep water.

Why It Matters?

The confirmed 29 fatalities make this one of the deadlier maritime disasters in the Philippines in recent years, with many more initially reported missing before bodies were recovered.

Ferry accidents are a persistent concern in the archipelagic Philippines, where inter-island vessels are a lifeline for communities but often face maintenance, training, and regulatory challenges.
