Northern Lights Orders Four New CO? Carriers in Major CCS Expansion

What Happened?

Europe’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) pioneer Northern Lights JV has awarded long-term charters for four new liquefied carbon dioxide (CO₂) carriers as part of a major fleet expansion to support Phase 2 of its CCS operations.

These vessels are being added to transport captured CO₂ from industrial sites across Europe to permanent offshore storage under the North Sea.

Why It Matters?

Northern Lights’ expansion comes as the project — part of Norway’s government-backed Longship initiative — aims to lift transport and storage capacity to more than 5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year.

Shipping CO₂ in liquefied form is a critical link in the CCS value chain — moving captured emissions from industrial facilities to subsea reservoirs for permanent storage.
