Maersk Bets on Flexibility With Order for Eight Dual-Fuel Containerships

What Happened?

A.P. Moller-Maersk has placed an order for eight large new container ships — each with a capacity of about 18,600 TEU — from China’s New Times Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. as part of its ongoing fleet renewal strategy.

The vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2030, and all will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on conventional bunker fuel or liquefied gas (LNG).

Why It Matters?

Rather than ordering only the largest megaships, Maersk is balancing size and flexibility, making its fleet more adaptable to evolving trade routes — including potential changes in major corridors like the Red Sea or Asia–Europe trades.

With this order, Maersk now has 33 vessels on its orderbook, strengthening its long-term capacity planning and helping ensure that renewal and modernization keep pace with global trade needs.
