France has confirmed plans to build a new-generation aircraft carrier to replace the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle as it approaches the end of its service life in the 2030s.
The future carrier will be larger, more powerful, and more capable, designed to operate next-generation fighter jets, drones, and advanced command systems, while maintaining France’s ability to project power globally.
Why It Matters?
Sustains Power Projection: Keeps France as Europe’s only navy with a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
NATO & EU Role: Strengthens European naval autonomy and alliance operations.
