China and Denmark have renewed a bilateral agreement to cooperate on green maritime technology and shipbuilding, reaffirming a long-standing partnership focused on low-carbon and sustainable innovations in the maritime sector.

This pact builds on decades of maritime cooperation dating back to the 1970s and linked to broader “Green Joint Work Programmes” focused on sustainable development, environmental protection, and green shipping between the two countries.

Why It Matters?

Global shipping accounts for significant greenhouse gas emissions, and developing green maritime technologies — such as fuels like ammonia or hydrogen, energy-efficient ship designs, and emission reduction systems — is crucial for meeting international climate targets.

China builds more than half of the world’s commercial ships, while Denmark has expertise in offshore wind, maritime services and green tech.
