Maersk Charts First Structural Return to Red Sea After Houthi Attacks

Historic Route Re-Opening

Maersk has announced its first structural return to the Red Sea and Suez Canal trade route after more than two years of diversion due to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on commercial shipping.

This marks a major shift back to the traditional East-West maritime corridor that had been largely avoided since late 2023.

Why It Matters?

The Red Sea and Suez Canal once carried about 10 % of global seaborne trade — one of the fastest links between Asia, Europe, and North America. Rerouting around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope added time and cost to shipping.

Maersk’s return signals improving security conditions that could shorten transit times and cut freight rates if sustained.
