Coast Guard Ramps Up Winter Mission to Protect Northeast Heating Oil Supply

What’s Happening?

As winter grips the U.S. Northeast, the U.S. Coast Guard has launched its annual winter energy security effort — Operation Reliable Energy for Northeast Winters (RENEW) 2026 — to keep heating oil flowing to millions of residents.

Operation RENEW — now in its second decade — focuses on icebreaking and support missions across Northeast waterways so that fuel, food, medical supplies, and goods can continue moving even in harsh winter conditions.

Why It Matters?

The Northeast accounts for about 85% of U.S. heating oil consumption, with roughly 90% of that fuel delivered via waterways maintained by the Coast Guard.

A disruption in these sea routes could leave homes and businesses without heat during the coldest months.
