Finland Says Ship Dragged Anchor for ‘Tens of Kilometers’ Before Baltic Sea Cable Break

What Happened?

Finnish investigators say the cargo ship Fitburg — seized in the Gulf of Finland — dragged its anchor along the seabed for at least tens of kilometers before breaking an undersea telecommunications cable linking Finland and Estonia.

The long drag track was discovered during an underwater survey leading directly to the damaged cable site.

Why It Matters?

Undersea cables carry internet and communications traffic vital to national security and commerce. Damage to them — whether accidental or intentional — can disrupt services and require costly repairs.

The lengthy anchor drag raises questions about navigational control, negligence, or possible sabotage, especially in a region that has seen repeated undersea infrastructure incidents.
