A sanctioned super-tanker once known as Bella 1 has become the unlikely flashpoint of a U.S.–Russia maritime confrontation. U.S. forces have been chasing the vessel across the Atlantic after attempting to intercept and seize it under U.S. sanctions enforcement authority.
In a dramatic twist, crew members painted a crude Russian flag on the hull and radioed that the ship now sailed under Russian protection, aiming to evade boarding by hinting at sovereign immunity.
The tanker was already on the U.S. sanctions radar due to alleged links with oil transport tied to Iran and other sanctioned networks — a classic example of a vessel in what analysts call the “shadow fleet,” vessels that frequently change names, flags, or tracking to evade Western restrictions.
Russia counters that its new registry grants the vessel sovereign protection, complicating any forced boarding and increasing the diplomatic stakes.
