Morocco Expanding Deepwater Ports Network With New Mediterranean and Atlantic Hubs

What’s Happening?

Morocco has announced plans to open two new deep-water ports: Nador West Med on the Mediterranean coast (operational by second half of 2026) and Dakhla Atlantique Port on the Atlantic coast (scheduled for 2028).

Nador West Med will start with about 800 hectares of industrial/port area, with scope to expand to 5,000 hectares — surpassing the industrial zone size of Tanger Med.

Why It Matters?

The new ports significantly expand Morocco’s maritime capacity — strengthening its position as a gateway between Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic or Mediterranean shipping lanes.

Nador West Med — being close to major East–West shipping routes — can become a major trans-shipment and container hub, helping decongest European ports and attracting global shipping lines.
