South Korea Arrests Crew Members for Negligence After Ferry Runs Aground
What Happened ?
South Korea’s coast guard arrested the first mate (first officer) and an Indonesian helmsman of a ferry that ran aground near an uninhabited island close to Mokpo.
The ferry, Queen Jenuvia II, was carrying 267 people (246 passengers, 21 crew).
Why They're Arrested
Authorities accuse them of gross negligence: they waited too long to take the ship off autopilot in a narrow, high-risk area.
The first mate reportedly was using his phone — reading news — while the ferry approached a turning point.
